Creating and editing a product attribute
What an attribute is
An attribute is a reusable product characteristic such as Color, Size, or Material. An attribute contains options: Color may contain Red and Blue, while Size may contain S, M, and L.
The same attribute and its options can be used by several products. Creating an attribute does not add it to every product automatically: you select the required attributes and available options separately in each product.
How to create an attribute
- Open Store → Attributes.
- Click the create attribute button.
- Enter a clear name that distinguishes the attribute from others.
- Select the type: normal for text and sizes, or color for shades with a visual swatch.
- Click Next and add options.
How to configure options
Each option is one attribute value. Click Add option and enter its name. For a color attribute, also select the exact color. Option names should describe the customer's choice unambiguously.
You can add, rename, and delete options within one attribute. Deleting one option does not delete the attribute. If an option is already used by a product variant, first remove it from the relevant variants and product binding; an option in use is protected from deletion.
How to bind an attribute to a product
- Open the product and go to Attributes and variants.
- Add the existing attribute.
- Select only the options actually available for this product.
- Save the binding.
A product variant can use only options selected for that product. For example, if Yellow exists in the reusable Color attribute but is not selected for the product, you cannot create a Yellow combination until that option is added to the product binding.
Normal and color attributes
Use the normal type for sizes, materials, and other text values. Use the color type for colors, and verify both the option name and the selected shade. Option images are configured in the specific product and are not a shared property of the reusable attribute.
Editing and deletion
Renaming an attribute or option changes the reusable catalog record, so the new name is visible in every product that uses it. Before deleting a whole attribute, check its use in products and variants. Deleting the attribute requires a separate confirmation; deleting one exact unused option is an internal attribute change.
Save the changes, then open the relevant product and verify that the intended options are selected.
